Jack, who is the four footed fellow on the Bradley Tree crew (and who
some of you will remember is a”Royal Bahamian Potcake”) wanted to share
some of his favorite tree info this month.
This first tree tip comes from https://www.arborday.org . The Arbor
Day Foundation helps with the research to improve Hazelnut cultivars. Did
you know that wild hazelnuts add to the genetic diversity used in testing for
plants that can thrive and have greater disease resistance? This tree has
great importance as a Food source, Feed for Animals, and as a BioEnergy
source. Hazelnut trees grow in New Hampshire, so if you know of any wild
hazelnuts you can contact them to see how you can help.
The next tree tip is all about a bug…. The Asian Longhorned Beatle aka
ALB. Don’t know what it looks like?
Click here to see it .
This beetle is an exotic pest, native to China and Korea, and is
threatening our forests and community trees. It is not yet in NH but has
infested trees in Worcester Mass resulting in the removal of over 24,000
trees! The public’s help is crucial for early detection.
And Jack’s third tree tip is ‘Plant a Tree’. Fall is an excellent time for
tree planting. Remember to dig the hole deep enough and wide enough.
And then water it well. Not just once, but regularly. Tree roots will continue
to grow until the ground freezes hard, so while Fall may be in the air trees
continue to grow. (And remember there’s still time to give your existing
trees their Deep Root Fertilization.)
Let’s keep our communities healthy and green!
